Your Bio

When George Eliot said "It is never too late to be what you might have been," she may have very well described the path I took to become a photographer. I changed my passion for words to images.

I am mainly a self-taught photographer.

I embrace the Proustian concept of memory. Photography enables me to capture a transient moment the way I originally perceive it, and manipulating the image afterwards allows me to enhance it as I envisage it. My goal is that my images--especially the heightened ones--captivate an illusory moment that a viewer will behold as her own memory.

The Advent of Christmas 2007 : In January 2007, like the magi, Aixa came home from a vacation in the far, far east bearing gifts. One of the gifts she brought from the Philippines was a star made from Capiz shells which she hand-carried through 4 airports. The star--parol--became the inspiration and the theme for this year's holiday celebration. This year, I unearthed all my Philippine textiles and native goods as we celebrated "Pasko!"

Dennis's and Ina's Wedding : September 8, 2007 was the day the Lord has made for Dennis and Ina. It was a day filled with love and gladness from sun-up to way into dark. There were tears of joy, there was laughter, there was a beautiful carriage ride, and there was dancing. Most of all, there was rejoicing! (The open bar wasn't too shabby!)

Oh, My Sedona! 9/2007 : The Red Rock country of Sedona is enthralling, and nothing like I've ever seen before. Set against the largest stand of verdant Ponderosa pines, the monoliths-- burnt sienna, raw umber, sepia, and vermillion, and towering sandstones the color of golden maize--were appropriately humbling. The locals regard Sedona as Grand Canyon's "pretty little sister."

GRAND CANYON 9/2007 : From where I stood, I can see the many miracles of the canyons. The hazy horizon delineated earth and sky. A California condor, with its 9ft wingspan glided across, landing on a promontory, face towards the rising sun. A mountain goat with its billy grazed on the scrub just below the platform which provided me with sure footing. Farther still is a gash of light among red rocks. A fellow visitor asked to peer through my camera lens to see what it was. Turned out to be an overturned truck; it was its length of roof that glinted in the sunlight. We both hoped for the best. Here, events of tragedy and grandeur are very clear.

Sunrise is my favorite time. All the earth is new again, like a newly-minted copper penny. Sometimes, the sun comes surreptitiously, peeking through trees; or across the horizon, inching up from the canyons. As its surroundings is bathed in a myriad of colors, the scenario can be unbearably pictorial. Albeit, I fail to record the moment as I stand slack-jawed, mesmerized by the splendor before me.

Perhaps it is in times like this when the Grand Canyon reveals its secrets--not just to me, but to everyone who would care to see. In the primal patterns of nature, beauty resides. This is the realm of God, and to see it is to enter into a mystical union with God--inescapable, encompassing, from a land before time.

This is why amidst this massive marvel of nature, I do not feel insignificant. I do not need angels' tongues to describe what my eyes have seen. Empowered, I reaffirm God's munificence through my creative structure--my work, my art, my worth.

Almonte/Morao Reunion : First, there was Shana and John's beautiful wedding, --and foremost, the Almontes and the Moraos shared many laughs, truckloads of catch-me-up stories, music, and dancing (...the dancing!) that neither drizzle, nor downpour, nor dour grey skies dampened our celebratory spirits the weekend of October 7, 2006.
